Your Patient Journey
Examination
The hygienist will examine your teeth and identify the degree of biofilm accumulation along your gum line and on your teeth. They will also check for periodontal pockets, which form when gum disease occurs.
They will brief you on the next steps needed, and let you know your gum health status. An ongoing plan may need to be formulated if you are suffering from periodontitis (advanced gum disease).
Ultrasonic scaling
Your teeth are gently scaled to remove the plaque and tartar buildup.
We can offer AIRFLOW® polishing equipment to remove the stubborn areas of staining, as an optional extra. We highly recommend this to patients who regularly sustain staining as a result of enjoying teeth-staining food and drink, as well as smokers. We are one of the few practices in our area to use the AIRFLOW® machine, which goes significantly further than the traditional scale and polish to remove stains.
Oral hygiene counselling
Your hygienist can offer advice on the following to help you care for your teeth and gums independently:
- Nutrition.
- Stopping smoking.
- Brushing and flossing tips.
- How certain medications affect gum health.

FAQs
What is AIRFLOW®?
The AIRFLOW® machine combines compressed air, water and powder particles. This powerful mixture is a non-invasive solution for ridding the mouth of lingering plaque and tartar. It is particularly effective for hard-to-reach parts of the mouth, which cannot be accessed with standard scaling equipment. We have invested in AIRFLOW® to help reduce our patients’ gum disease risk.
How often do I need to see the hygienist?
Patients without any severe gum problems should visit for a routine scale and polish one or two times per year. We may need to see you more regularly if you are suffering from advanced or advanced gum disease.
How long does it take for a hygienist to clean your teeth?
Your routine appointment will generally take between 30 minutes to an hour. The time scale will depend on how much biofilm needs to be removed from your gum line, and how much discussion is needed between you and your hygienist. We never rush appointments, believing instead that they are a golden opportunity to help you better understand how to care for your gum health. With gum disease remaining the biggest threat to oral health amongst adults in the UK, this couldn’t be more important.
